Two people were arrested last month after the car they were riding in hit and damaged a telephone pole.

Lancaster Police Capt. Scott Grant said Angela Steele Starnes, 35, 4591 Foster Blackmon Drive, Heath Springs, and William Lee Pate, 24, 1004 Bubba Lane, Lancaster, were both arrested Jan. 3. Starnes was charged with driving under the influence, while Pate was charged with public drunk, Grant said.

Officers responded to the accident scene at the intersection of Chesterfield Avenue and Hampton Road shortly after 10:30 p.m., according to a Lancaster Police Department incident report.

When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed a large crowd of people standing near the telephone pole. A witness told officers a gold Ford van parked down the street had struck the pole and then drove a short distance before stopping.

The officers approached the van, which was parked on the right side of the road, and noticed both right side tires were flat and there was heavy damage to the right front corner, the report said.

After checking on the driver and a passenger, officers noticed an alcoholic odor inside the van. Officers asked the driver, Starnes, to take a sobriety test, though she did not pass and was then arrested, the report said.

The passenger, Pate, was taken by ambulance to Springs Memorial Hospital to be examined for injuries. He was later cleared and arrested for public drunk and taken back to the police department, the report said.

Starnes was released Jan. 3 on a $997 personal recognizance bond, while Pate was released the same day on a $190 personal recognizance bond, according to Lancaster Municipal Court records.

Estimated damage to the telephone pole is unknown.
