The Indian Land Warriors moved their hoops mark to 3-1 with an exciting 51-49 road win over Cuthbertson High School of Union County, N.C., on Friday, Dec. 13.
Warriors’ sophomore guard Darnell Rogers penetrated inside and dished off to Lee McCall, who converted the game-winning basket to lift the Warriors to the win.
“I was real happy with the win,” Indian Land High boys basketball coach Nate Smith said. “We had three sophomores in our lineup, and they came through and played well for us.
“Mark Morton had an outstanding defensive game for us,” Smith said. “It was a team effort, with Darnell making the key move and then finding Lee for the winning basket.”
Cuthbertson led 29-26 at the half, but the Warriors rallied in the third period to regain the lead at 42-40.
The final period was tight, with the Warriors prevailing with McCall’s winning hoop.
Rogers led the Warriors with 20 and McCall netted 10.
Morton finished with nine. Brandon Barnes hit seven and Quantra Taylor added four.
Derries Hampton added one for the winners.
Nick Karas led the Cavaliers with 10 points.
In the girls game, Cuthbertson rolled to a 65-24 win.
The Lady Cavaliers, up 23-12 at the half, used a 24-4 third-period run to take a 47-16 lead on the way to the victory.
Jessica Reynolds led the Lady Warriors with eight points.
Kate Komorous and Mary McGunegle each tallied five points.
Mi’Asia McCarter and Monae Brown each scored three points.
On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the Warriors posted an 84-60 road win over Lewisville High School in Richburg.
The Warriors forged a 28-19 lead at the half and stretched the margin to 60-41 after three periods and cruised to the lopsided win.
Darnell Rogers, who led Indian Land with 22 points, hit 14 points in the third period to spark the Warriors’ charge.
Brandon Barnes hit 20, 11 in the final period. Quantra Taylor scored 12.
Lee McCall netted eight. Derries Hampton supplied six as did Brandon Sellers.
Mark Truesdale and Mark Morton each had three points. Jake Dwyer and Mike Webb hit two points.
Marcus McCullough led Lewisville with 13 points and Tywan McCullough added 12 for the Lions.
The Warriors hosted Lewisville on Tuesday night in non-region play.
The IL girls will play in a holiday tournament at Forest Hills on Union County, N.C., on Thursday and Saturday.
