Warriors, Jackets split

BUFORD –  The Indian Land Warriors stayed unbeaten in Region IV-AA basketball play, rolling to an 87-55 win over Buford on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in the BHS gym.


The sixth-rated Warriors, 14-2, 5-0, used a fast start to notch the 32-point win.

The IL boys’ win gave the Warriors a split after the Lady Jackets finished strong for a 68-57 win.

The Warriors used a fast start to spark their win in the nightcap.

Rakym Felder, who led IL with 19 points, netted eight of his 13 first-half points to key the Warriors to a 23-9 lead.

Indian Land kept rolling in taking a 50-23 halftime lead.

“Building the early lead was a key,” IL coach Nate Smith said. “I thought we executed well. Our practices have gone well and that’s the key to our good execution.”

Felder had plenty of help on the offense end, with senior Haydan Sawyer hitting 18, 12 in the first half. Chris Barnes netted 15, nine in the opening half, and Darnell Rodgers scored 14, eight points in the second half.

Lee McCall hit eight points. Connor Butler and Marty Cauthen each had four. Myles Webb tallied three on a trey. and Cameron Davis added two.

Buford, 6-7, 0-5, was led by Mikeem McKinney’s 12 points. Garrett Crenshaw hit 10 and Corey Bracey added eight. Christian Joplin netted six. Orantez Coleman and Kholby Pate added five points each. Evan Joplin added four.

Jesse Stacks tallied three and Dru Rollings added two.

“You have to credit Indian Land,” BHS coach Neil Couch said. “Indian Land plays the way it’s supposed to be played. They have some very good players.

“Our guys played hard, but Indian Land was just too strong.”

In the girls game, Buford, 10-6, 2-3, posted its second straight region win with a 68-57 victory over the Lady Warriors.

BHS held a 25-24 lead early in the second half, but the Lady Jackets ignited on a 10-0 run to build a 35-24 lead.

IL, 2-14, 0-5, rallied in the final period to close the gap to 49-47, but BHS responded again with a key 19-10 charge to take the 58-47 win.

BHS aided its cause with a 17 of 23 free throw effort, including 10 of 10 in the second half.

IL was 21 of 41 at the stripe.

The Lady Jackets were led by senior ace Carley Bailey, who hit 32, 19 in the second half. She netted 10 in the first period when BHS built an 18-5 edge.

“Carley had an outstanding game for us, and I was proud of our team contribution in the game,” BHS coach T.J. Armbrust said. “We had eight players score and that was a plus.

Bailey led BHs with 32. Tatyana Stewart scored eight and Erica Blackmon added seven. Megan Deese and Gabby Davis each tallied six points.Adrianna Ray hit four points and Mikayla Hannah added three. Courtney Snipes added two.

“Indian Land battled the entire game, but we responded well and earned the win,” Armbrust said.

Shalyn Dougherty led IL with 17, 11 after the break. Kate Komorous hit 13. Asha McIlwain netted nine.

Kendra Nesmith and Jessica Reynolds added eight points.

Selena Stroble and Mi’Asia McCarter added one each.

“This was our best overall game to this point,” Indian Land High School girls coach Natasha Farmer said. “We played well. We had some breakdowns, but we were pleased with the effort.”

In junior varsity action on Wednesday, Jan. 23, Indian Land swept to a pair of wins over the Buford High junior varsity basketball teams.

The Junior Lady Warriors took a 30-26 win.

Bailey Penegar hit 11 to lead the Indian Land girls.

Colette Cedarstrom scored eight. Reagan Moore had five and Ally Whoy added four. Danielle Miller had two.

The Buford girls were led by Jensen Shelby’s 15 points.

Ty Hough hit six and Cassidy Solomon hit four and Betty Ingram had one.

Indian Land took a 56-31 win in the boys game.

Austin Gordon generated 13 for the Junior Warriors in their 25-point victory.

Hosea Hameed and Brandon Sellers each scored eight.

Mark Morton and Devin Tossinger each tallied seven points. Quantra Taylor hit six. Duncan hit three.

Avery Walls and Manny McCord each had two points for the Junior Warriors.

Buford was led by Christian Joplin’s seven points. D.J. Stradford netted six. Tyrus McGriff had five and Wade Lambert added four.

Brandom Joplin tallied three. Christian Catledge, Tyler Stroud and Zach Brown added two points each.

In Region IV-AA varsity basketball action tonight, Buford travels to county rival Andrew Jackson.

 Indian Land will hit the road to face the Cheraw Braves.
