Braves edge Jackets

At Cheraw High, the  Braves, the Conference IV-AA regular-season champion, used a 21-0 late flurry to take a 39-33 win over the  Jackets on Wednesday night.

Cheraw, seeded fifth in the Upper State field, advances to face Broome High School in a 2 p.m. second-round match on Saturday.

Broome, seeded fourth, notched a 35-21 home win over 13th-seeded Pendleton on Wednesday night.

“The forfeits hurt us against a good team like Cheraw,” BHS wrestling coach John Mahaffey said. “I was proud of our guys because they wrestled hard and gave a good effort.

“We gave up 12 points on two forfeits, so that proved to be a key factor in a close match.”

BHS was paced by Zach Wright, Austin Robinson and Marcus Pressley, who each had a pin. Eric McPhearson posted a superior decision and Andrew Broome had major decision to aid BHS.

The Jackets finished 11-11 this season.

“It’s been an up-and-down season, but I feel good about the future with a good nucleus back and some talented wrestlers coming from our middle school team,” Mahaffey said.
