Volunteers hold off Bruins for win

Andrew Jackson built a 5-1 lead and held on for a 5-3 win over Lancaster to sweep the season baseball series on Wednesday, March 26.

AJ senior hurler Dustin Eddins, who worked 6.1 innings, was the winner, scattering eight hits and two walks. He fanned six. Trey Rollings, in two-thirds inning of relief, fanned two for the save.

Eddins aided his cause with a hit.

Alex Brasington had two singles and drove in a run. Kipp Rollings had a double and drove in a run. Trey Rollings added a hit.

Lancaster southpaw Brooks Viola took the loss.

The Bruins’ Dalton Creighton had three hits, a double and two singles, and drove in two runs. Wesley Knight had two singles and scored a run.

Jordan Caroway had a hit and tallied a run. Austin Richardson and Jason Dobbins each had a hit. Brady Collins scored a run for LHS.

The Volunteers hosted Indian Land on Thursday, March 27. LHS hosts Rock Hill tonight at 7 in region play.

Lady Bruins top Clover

The Lancaster Lady Bruins posted a historic soccer win, downing Region III-AAAA foe Clover, 2-1 for their first-ever  win over the Lady Blue Eagles on Wednesday, March 26.

Lancaster snapped a 1-1 tie in a tight, defensive struggle as LHS senior striker Frances Whitesides broke free on a pass from Peyton Patterson and scored with less than two minutes to play.

“This is a great win for our program,” LHS coach Ed Humphrey said. “The team played great, we passed well, communicated and played as a unit for the whole game. I am proud of all the girls.”

Clover took an early lead on a Claire Allen goal, but LHS answered as Patterson tallied on a Gracie Scott assist. Effie Spears posted 14 saves in the win.

LHS, 7-3, is 3-2 in region play.

u Lancaster opened the week with a 5-1 win over Sumter as the Lady Bruins forged a 4-0 halftime lead.

Jesse Dukes opened the scoring with a put-in of a cross by Frances Whitesides.

Whitesides tallied on an assist from Brooke Humphrey. Peyton Patterson tallied twice, with  assists from Hannah Knight and Humphrey.

Whitesides, in the second half, scored off a Knight assist.

Senior Kenyatta Robertson had a save in the LHS win.

Buford edges Cheraw

Buford’s Troy Cunningham scored on an error in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Jackets to a 4-3 Region IV-AA home baseball win over Cheraw on Tuesday, March 24.

Austin Pate hurled the win in 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed a hit and two walks. Pate fanned three. Evan Flynn worked 8.1 frames and yielded three runs, no earned runs, two hits, three walks and hit two batters. Flynn struck out 12.

Brady Horton had a hit, RBI and scored a run. Cunningham had a hit and tallied a run. Kholby Pate and Daniel Mackey each scored a run.

Vols rip Rams

Andrew Jackson drilled 13 hits on the way to an 11-1 Region IV-AA road baseball win over Chesterfield in five innings Tuesday, March 25.

Kipp Rollings ripped three doubles and drove in three runs to lead the Vols. Austin Wrape and Dustin Eddins each had a single, double and drove in a run. Logan Lucas and Eric Miles had two hits and a RBI. Trey Rollings supplied a hit and drove in a run. Corley Faulkenberry had a hit.

Eric Miles, 3-0, went five frames for the win. He allowed an unearned run and three hits. He struck out four.

AJ hosted Indian Land on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Eagles edge Warriors

Central of Pageland stayed unbeaten in Region IV-AA baseball play with a 5-4 win over Indian Land on Tuesday, March 25 in Pageland.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the narrow win.

Chris Cantrell, who worked seven innings, took the loss. Sam Caldwell, who worked in relief, was the winner.

Mike Webb led IL with a home run, double and two RBIs. Darian Gueldner and Chuck Webb each had a double. Chris Cantrell, Jake Dyer and James Porcelly each had a hit for IL.

IL softball wins

The Indian Land Lady Warriors upped their mark to 5-1 on the season, 4-1 in region play, with a 9-2 win over Central of Pageland on Tuesday, March 25.

Kayla Price, 5-1, hurled the win and supplied two hits and two RBIs in the Lady Warriors’ win.

Alli Yarborough had three hits, including a three-run home run and a double.

Savannah Bean rapped two hits and Malya Flynn had a single for the IL girls.

IL visits Andrew Jackson to face the Lady Vols on Friday, March 28.

Warriors down Vols

The Indian Land boys soccer team downed Andrew Jackson 3-1 in a Region IV-AA match at AJ on Tuesday, March 25.

IL keeper Jake Barton posted six saves.

Jordan Szustwal scored two goals, one on a penalty kick for the Warriors. Garrett Gerdes assisted on Szustwal’s first tally. Gerdes also scored off a Roscoe Lovejoy assist.

Zach Arioli scored the first goal of the match to put the Vols up, 1-0.

IL, 7-2, is 2-0 in region play. AJ fell to 2-7, 1-1 in region matches.

The Vols visited county rival Buford on Thursday night.

Lady Warriors win

The Indian Land Lady Warriors blanked Andrew Jackson, 4-0 in Region IV-AA soccer play on Tuesday, March 25 at AJ.

Shalyn Dougherty and Katherine Kilroy each scored two goals for the Lady Warriors, who held a 2-0 edge at the half.

Kate Komorous and Alexys Loveless each had an assist in the win.

IL had 17 shots to three for AJ.

Isabella Maia had three saves for the IL girls.

Jackets down Braves

The Buford varsity soccer team rebounded from its first loss last week to take a 3-1 win over Cheraw.

CHS tallied first, but the determined Jackets responded with a goal from senior captain Andrew “Red” Ellis, off an assist from sophomore BJ Black.

In the second half, Wade Lambert scored on a great header to push the Jackets into the lead, and later, Ellis got his “brace” for the night, wrapping up scoring to reach the final of 3-1.

Senior captain goalkeeper Corey Bracey had a key stop on a very questionable penalty kick midway through the second half, and the crucial play inspired the Jackets to finish strong in the match.

Wade Lambert, sophomore Danual Purser, and freshman Victoria Hinson had their best matches of the season.

The back line of junior captain Valerie Jones, sophomore Samual Purser, freshman Matt Hunter, and sophomore Zac Smith held their shape much better, to draw many offsides calls on the eager Braves.

Junior Jackets win

The Buford High junior varsity soccer team dropped its first match of the regular season at Cheraw, 3-1 on Tuesday, March 25.

Bryton Davis scored the lone goal on a rainy, cold night, where the Junior Jackets had many chances, but struggled to find the back of the net.

Keeper Josh Parris had five saves in the loss, and the Jr. Braves converted 3 shots, despite questionable offside players that went unnoticed by the lone official who started the match.

The Junior Jackets played hard, but were a little out of rhythm for much of the match.

The BHS jayvee and varsit Jackets hosted AJ on Thursday, March 27.

Buford High’s junior varsity soccer team opened its regular season on a high note, taking a region victory at Indian Land on Thursday, March 20.

The Junior Warriors held a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from Daniel Kilroy and Alex Theodore.

The determined Junior Jackets used an inspired second half for the win.

Forward Bryton Davis started the scoring in the second half, followed by goals from center mid Ben Rhoton, and closing with the deciding goal, scored by Nate Purser with a few minutes to play.

Indian Land’s keeper had five saves, while Buford keeper Josh Parris had seven.
