Vols roll in Comporium opener

AJ rips Gators, 18-1

The Andrew Jackson Volunteers were impressive in their opener in the Comporium Invitational preseason baseball tournament with an 18-1 win over Lakewood High of Sumter on Saturday at AJ.

Chandler Gardner, who hurled three innings, was the winner. He allowed a hit, no walks and fanned six. Dustin Eddins pitched two frames and gave up a run, three hits, a walk and fanned two.

Chandler Neal and Sidney Watson each drilled two hits and drove in two runs. Bobby Delly had two hits and a RBI.

Adam Eubanks and Tripp Rollings each belted a two-run home run. Ryan Phillips had a hit and drove in three runs.

Tanner Gardner and D.J. McIlwain each had a hit and a RBI. Dustin Eddins added a hit.

Watson had the game’s defensive gem, robbing Lakewood’s Dolan Crolley of a home run as he reached over the fence for the stellar play.

Crolley had a hit and drove in a run for the Gators.

Play was canceled Monday due to inclement weather, with the Vols to face Nation Ford on Tuesday and McBee on Thursday. Tourney play concludes at Buford on Saturday.

u Buford fell in its tournament opener, dropping an 8-3 loss to Class A foe Chesterfield.

Colt Ellis, who hurled 4.2 frames, took the loss, allowing six runs, two walks, an earned run and seven hits. He fanned one. Kendall Knight hurled an inning and gave up two unearned runs and three hits. Logan Segee pitched a third of an inning.

Segee led the offense with two doubles and drove in a run. Ricky Lewis drilled a solo home run.

Ellis and Jacob Jamison each had a hit and scored a run. Jay Chambers and Tripp Wright each supplied a hit. Kendrick Trapp had a stolen base.

Buford faced Ridge View on Tuesday and South Pointe at the BHS field on Thursday.

 The Jackets host the final round Saturday when play begins at 11 a.m.
