Andrew Jackson placed third in a 10-team field at the Gilbert Soccer Classic on Saturday, March 2.

The AJ booters opened play against Class AAAA opponent Sumter High School, fallinig 2-1 to the Gamecocks.

Sumter took a two-goal lead before a late rally by the Vols fell short. Luke Kennington scored the Vols goal after a very neatly played through ball by Zach Arioli from the midfield.

AJ almost won the game in the closing seconds after freshman, Luke Sowell headed a corner on target only to be saved by Sumter’s goalkeeper.

Friday night saw the Vols defeat Saluda, 3-0. Zach Arioli opened the Vols’ scoring, followed by a Matt Tesser goal, and a late penalty kick goal by Matthew Woods. Ryan Burgess and Luke Kennington shared the shutout as the Volunteer goalkeepers.

Andrew Jackson capped group play Saturday morning with a 5-0 win over eighth-rated Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School. Luke Kennington scored the Vols first two goals in the opening three minutes.

Trevor Hammond scored a headed goal off a Kennington cross to end the half 3-0.

McKenzie Denkins netted a penalty kick for the Vols in the second half, and Zach Arioli netted his second goal of the tournament.

The Vols then faced Class AAA foe Swansea in the third-place match on Saturday evening.

Luke Kennington scored his fourth goal of the tournament off a Josh Croxton cross to give Andrew Jackson the victory. The Vols took the win after a scrappy final few minutes in which Ryan Burgess produced a couple of spectacular saves in goal.

A 3-2 win over Sumter in the championship match saw Gilbert win the tournament.

The Indians were down to Sumter 2-0 at the half only to rally back with three second-half goals.

AJ hosted Gilbert on Tuesday, March 5.

The Lewisville Lions travel to AJ on Thursday, March 7. The girls play at 5:30 p.m., with the boys at 7.
