Most folks in our area know the importance of the University of South Carolina Lancaster in our community.
Palmetto State residents now know what we’ve known for years.
USCL, a regional campus of the University of South Carolina, was recently ranked as the most successful two-year campus in the Palmetto State.
A summary of college and university graduation rates prepared by the S.C. Commission on Higher Education scored USCL at a success rate of 66.9 percent.
USCL is often in the state’s top three, but the latest score put it as the top of the state’s 20 two-year educational institutions, which includes USC’s four regional campuses and the state’s 16 technical colleges.
USCL’s success rate is based on the three-year performance of the 329 students who started their post-secondary education at the university in 2008, the latest cohort tracked.
“This tells me we’re doing what we’re here to do,” said Ron Cox, the USCL associate dean for academic affairs. “We’re servicing the students who might not be able to get to a university otherwise, and we’re doing it very well.
Cox said USCL’s success is based on several factors.
He credits the university’s administrators, recruiting staff, faculty and the staff of program such as TriO, which put the student first.
USCL, which now offers several four-year programs, is looking to build on its success with an eye on the future.
“Our goal is to get these students through these degree programs, and we never lost sight of the fact that the student is the focus,” Cox said. “Of course. it always feels good to be No. 1, but there’s always room for improvement.”
USCL, which is now 53 years old, has come a long way since its early days in the old Williams home in downtown Lancaster.
It began in 1959 with a handful of students and has grown to an enrollment. which is expected to exceed 2,000 students, who attend classes at the campus which now covers 150 acres on Hubbard Drive.
The campus has grown in recent years with new buildings and renovations as being a vibrant part of our community.
USCL is a key part of the community with the programs it offers and has made a major effort to provide athletics at the school.
The student body features its share of local students, but also those from across the state as well as international students.
We say keep a close eye on USCL because it offers a bright future.
Obviously, somebody has taken notice. You don’t reach No. 1 without a keen eye cast your way.
