Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored during the following events in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • The Lancaster Branch of the NAACP will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. program at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 at St. Paul AME Church on Barr Street. The speaker is the Rev. Lemuel Washington. For details, call (803) 283-3863.
  • The Martin Luther King Jr. Social Action Committee and Citadel of Hope Christian Fellowship will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial service at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 in the Fairway Room at the Lancaster Golf Course, 1821 Springs Club Road. The event will feature the Rev. Sandra Sistare, pastor of Steele Hill AME Zion Church and the Steele Hill Mass Choir.
  • Faith, Hope and Victory Christian Church will hold its 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Scholarship Breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21 at Covenant Baptist Church. The speaker will be Tawana Williams, author and motivational speaker. Proceeds will benefit the Rosetta Seegars, Henry Pelham Sr., Hester Wade Memorial Scholarship Fund.   • Mount Carmel AME Zion Church will feature guest speaker Queen Tommicha Walker during its Martin Luther King Jr. Day service at noon Monday, Jan. 21. Queen Tommicha is “dedicated to tasks assigned to her, she is thorough, dependable and relishes opportunities to assume responsibilities, in addition to having a contagious laugh.”  She is a 1981 graduate of Lancaster High School, a 1985 graduate of Winthrop College, with a bachelor’s degree in communications, and a 1995 graduate of Winthrop University, with a master’s of education degree in agency counseling.   • The Kershaw branch of the NAACP will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Kershaw First Baptist Church, 401 N. Hampton St. Guest speaker is the Rev. Reo King, pastor of Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church in Kershaw. For details, call (803) 475-4174.
