Two Lancaster County men died in separate automobile accidents Sunday, May 11.

The first accident happened Sunday morning about 4:55 on McIlwain Road south of Lancaster. Lancaster County Coroner Mike Morris identified the victim as 26-year-old Westley Phillips of Kershaw.

S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne said Phillips was driving south on McIlwain Road in a 2004 Mazda 6 when he drove off the right side of the road and overcorrected.

His car then veered across to the left side of the road where it struck a power pole and a bridge abutment, Rhyne said

Rhyne said Phillips was not wearing a seat belt and died on the scene.

Sunday evening accident

The second accident happened about 10:30 Sunday evening when a car struck a man driving a mo-ped on Pink Plylar Road in the Buford community.

Lancaster County Chief Deputy Coroner Karla Knight Deese said Donald Poston, 52, died Monday morning of head injuries sustained in the accident.

SCHP Lance Cpl. Gary Miller said Poston was driving east on Pink Plylar Road about 10 miles outside Lancaster when his 2009 mopped was rear-ended by a 2003 Honda sedan driven by Trevor Allen Small, 18, of Lancaster.

Poston, who was not wearing a helmet, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center, Miller said. Small was uninjured in the accident.

Miller said as of now no charges have been filed in the accident pending the outcome of an investigation by the highway patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Though Miller identified Poston through the Mecklenburg County coroner as a Kershaw resident other reports indicate he may have lived much closer to the accident scene at a home in the 3400 block of Heyward Hough Road in Buford.
