Two men were tracked down and arrested for murder within hours of the shooting death of a Kershaw man Wednesday evening, Aug. 21.
Ronald Eugene Reed Jr., 39, 3591 Rocky River Road, Heath Springs, was arrested just after 1 :15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.
Gregory D. Follansbee, 46, 11035 Elven Drive, Indian Land, was arrested at his home late Wednesday night.
The two are charged in the death of Bryan Matthew Hatchel, 30, 308 Harold Faulkenberry Road, Kershaw.
According to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies swarmed Hatchel’s home about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday after a getting a call and found Hatchel, who had been shot several times.
Hatchel died at the scene, the release said.
Harold Faulkenberry Road is between Heath Springs and Kershaw. It runs between Kershaw Camden Highway and Center Grove Road.
A group of criminal and crime scene investigators arrived soon after and began searching the scene.
During their investigation, they learned Reed and Follansbee came to Hatchel’s home and allegedly shot him multiple times, the release said. The two men then fled.
Within a few hours of the shooting, the Lancaster County SWAT Team executed a search warrant at Follansbee’s home, where he was found and arrested, the release said. He has been charged with murder.
On Thursday morning, authorities were still on the hunt for Reed and had issued a warning that he was “armed and dangerous,” though he was later found at his Rocky River Road home, the release said. Deputies arrested him at about 1:15 p.m. and served him with a warrant for murder.
On Thursday, Follansbee and Reed were jailed at the Lancaster County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings. Sheriff’s Maj. Matt Shaw expected those hearings to be held Thursday afternoon.
“There will be bond hearings, but no bond because a Magistrate judge can’t set a bond on a murder charge. That needs to be done in General Sessions court,” Shaw said.
The case is still under investigation, though Shaw confirmed that Reed and Hatchel were related.
“They are brothers-in-law and Hatchel was married to Reed’s sister,” Shaw said.
He also confirmed that the two men had some type of previous dispute, though investigators have yet to fully uncover details about the dispute.
“We haven’t determined that to any degree of certainty at this point,” Shaw said. “We have talked to various family members and it all boils down to there being some prior stuff going on between them (the two men)."
Both Reed and Follansbee have previous criminal records, according to the S.C. Judicial Department online case database.
Reed has a pending charge of assault and battery with intent to kill stemming from a July 2002 arrest, while Follansbee pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail or a $100 fine earlier this year for a charge of unlawful carrying of a pistol from a Nov. 2012 arrest, per judicial records.
