Applications for Leroy Springs student loans will be available on Nov. 1 for students seeking assistance for college costs for the spring semester. The deadline for receipt of applications is Dec. 1.
The Springs Close Foundation Inc. has made 133 interest-free loans so far this year to college students who live in Lancaster County and the Chester and Fort Mill areas.
Funds advanced will total $417,070 for an average of $3,136 per student. Included in these figures are loans made to students attending York Technical College, for an average of $1,500 per student.
Loans are available to students who meet residential, academic and financial need requirements and who attend a four-year, accredited, degree-granting college in South Carolina or York Technical College. Students in the program are enrolled at 24 colleges in the state this year.
The University of South Carolina (including those at USC Lancaster, USC Upstate and USC Aiken) has 47 student loan recipients, the largest number, followed by Clemson University with 21, Winthrop University and the College of Charleston, with 16 each.
Parents do not have to meet any special employment requirements. Although the largest number of parents of students are employed as teachers, 75 other businesses and professions are represented.
Of the total number of loans made this year, 78 were made to female students and 55 were to male students.
Loans were made to 63 students in Lancaster County, 61 in the Fort Mill area and nine in the Chester area.
The Springs Close Foundation will loan up to $3,000 per year for undergraduate students and $4,000 per year for students attending medical or dental school.
The loans are interest-free and may be repaid over a period of four to seven years.
Application forms and information booklets can be obtained from the offices of The Springs Close Foundation at the Springs House, 201 W. Gay St., Lancaster; at 951 Market St., Suite 205 (Exchange Building – second floor), Fort Mill; and at 109 Gadsden St., Chester. They can also be picked up at the Leroy Springs & Co.
