CHERAW – Third-quarter dry spells foiled Buford’s victory hopes in a pair of Region IV-AA basketball losses at Cheraw High School on Friday, Feb. 7.

The Lady Jackets dropped a tough 55-53 loss and the BHS boys fell to Cheraw, 66-55.

In each defeat, third-period scoring lapses hurt the Jackets.

In the boys game, Buford trailed 33-24 at the half, and then the Braves used a 17-6 third quarter to gain a 50-30 lead.

The Jackets, bolstered by Corey Bracey’s 17 fourth-quarter points, battled back, but couldn’t net the comeback win.

Buford, 9-11, 2-6, outscored Cheraw, 25-16 in the final quarter only to fall short.

“We have to play all four periods and be there for 32 minutes,” Buford coach Neil Couch said.

Cheraw, up 19-13 after one period, used a 14-11 second-quarter charge to gain a 33-24 lead at the half.

The Braves, who were led by Zach Sellers’ 27 points – 14 in the second half, then used the 17-6 surge to take control on the way to the win.

Dalvin Taylor, who netted 19 points, scored 10 in the first half.

Bracey’s 20 points led Buford and Kholby Pate hit 15, eight in the first half. Garrett Crenshaw finished with eight and Druw Rollings had five. Orantez Coleman had three. Tomas Hayden and Christian Joplin added two points each.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Jackets, also hampered by a dismal third-period, dropped a two-point setback.

Buford started strong and held a 33-22 spread, but in the third period, Cheraw used a 19-3 charge to gain a 41-36 edge. The Lady Jackets, 7-11, 1-7, outscored Cheraw in the final period, 17-14 only to drop the two-point defeat.

“We played well for three quarters and the third period hurt,” BHS coach T.J. Armbrust said. “We played hard at the end and were very competitive.”

Gabby Davis, who led Buford with 29, scored 21 in the first half when the Lady Jackets gained their 11-point lead.

Autumn Rabon hit eight and Jasona Ballard scored seven. Valerie Jones had five and Tatyana Stewart scored four.

Tajee Turner tallied nine to lead CHS. Daebreon McIver and Ladaisia Jackson each scored eight points.

Buford, which faced Lewisville at home on Saturday in a make-up game, hosts Chesterfield High on Tuesday, Feb 11.
