Teamwork's key in win

The team of Ray Ackerman, Rodney Thomas, Jeff Reynolds and Bobby Fleming captured top honors in the seventh annual Matt Blackwell Foundation golf tournament on Saturday at the Lancaster Golf Club.The winning foursome topped the field with a 47.7.Ackerman said teamwork contributed to the team’s triumph.“We really teamed up well,” Ackerman said. “Seems like each member of our team had a hand in our first-place finish.“Rodney Thomas was clutch on some putts from 10 to 12 feet for us,” Ackerman said. “He had a steady putter all day.“We all made some long putts to help the effort,” he said. “It was good to win because there was a lot of good teams and good golfers entered in the tournament. Everything went well for us.”Ackerman said the winning team had 14 birdies, three eagles and a par.A field of 120 golfers competed in the captain’s choice tournament held each summer in memory of the late Matthew Blackwell.The runner-up team included the foursome of Toby Taylor, Taylor Banks, Trevor Banks, and Graham Taylor. The posted a 48.Tony Cauthen, Danny Reynolds, Kenny Shaw and Dennis Glover teamed to claim third place, shooting a 48.5.Closest to the pin awards went to Larry Westcott (No. 4), Mark Barrett (No. 7), Darren Gentile (No. 13) and Mike Roddey (No. 15).The men’s longest drive winner was Skip Small, while Wake Forest University golfer Laura Crawford captured the women’s longest drive title.Tom Syfan took home the senior’s longest drive award.Jimmy Jackson was this year’s $500 putting contest winner.“We continue to be overwhelmed and touched by the tremendous support our tournament receives each year,” said Larry Blackwell, Matt’s father. “We actually had to turn teams away, which is a good problem to have.“I commend the entire staff at the Lancaster Golf Club for their tremendous help and support in assuring our tournament would run smoothly.“The course was in excellent shape, once again, and the golfers seemed to really enjoy themselves,” Blackwell said. “Finally, a big thank you to tournament director Butch Small, the Matt Blackwell Foundation’s Board of Directors, our sponsors, and the many volunteers who came together to help make this year’s golf tournament another tremendous success.”The Matt Blackwell Foundation is a non-profit organization, serving the youth in Lancaster County by supporting and establishing programs and projects that promote their physical and mental well-being.For more information on the foundation’s work in the community go to www.mattblackwellfoundation.org
