In more than two decades of service as the director of the Lancaster County Voter Registration and Election Commission Office, Cassie Stump has seen plenty.
During her 20 years with the county, Stump has seen voting go from the use of paper ballots to the now easier-to-use touch screens at the various county precincts.
“Now we have electronic voting equipment, which is so easy to us,” said Stump, who retired from her duties Dec. 30.
In addition, Stump saw her office move from the old county administration building, which was adjacent to the old county courthouse, to the historic courthouse and now to the newer Lancaster County Administration Building.
Through it all, the personable Stump has been the constant.
“Cassie Stump is probably the easiest person I’ve ever worked with,” said Mary Ann Hudson, Stump’s successor and former co-worker.
“It’s going to be hard to find somebody like her. She and I have never had any issues working together.”
That’s not a surprise since Stump, with her easy-going personality, was always congenial and helpful to those in her office for assistance.
Her manner was needed with the many changes over the years with the county voting system.
There have been times in her years of service it wasn’t all good, but Stump always kept an upbeat and positive approach. She handled her duties as a good ambassador for the county.
Her vast knowledge of the election process, as well as her experience, made a major impact.
“She knows a lot about the districts and maps and I depend on her,” Hudson said. “You can name a road and she can say where a resident probably votes at. Without her, we’ll be looking a lot of stuff up.”
Although she’s retired now, Stump plans to keep busy, and you might see her again in the public eye.
“My parents were really involved in Meals on Wheels, so maybe it’s my turn to help,” said Stump, who plans to spend time with her mother, among other activities and hobbies.
Time with her husband, Randy, and their pet schnauzer, Elkie, will also be high on her list in retirement.
Whatever path life takes her, we wish her the best, and add a word of thanks for a job well done.
Her work and dedication to upgrades in the county voting system will have an impact on voters for years to come.
