Leroy Springs Student Loans will be available beginning Nov. 1 for students seeking assistance for college costs for the spring semester.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Dec. 1.

The Springs Close Foundation Inc. has made 147 interest-free loans so far this year to college students who live in Lancaster County and Chester and Fort Mill.

Funds advanced will total $453,616 for an average of $3,086 per student. Included in these figures are loans made to students attending York Technical College for an average of $1,500 per student.

The loan program was established in 1942 and, since that time, 8,164 loans have been made for a total of nearly $8.8 million.

Loans are available to students who meet residential, academic and financial-need requirements and who attend a four-year, accredited, degree-granting college in South Carolina or York Technical College.

Students in the program are enrolled at 21 colleges in the state this year.

The University of South Carolina (including the University of South Carolina at Lancaster, USC Upstate, USC Aiken and USC Sumter) had 58 student loan recipients, the largest number, followed by Clemson University with 20, Winthrop University with 19 and the College of Charleston with 11.

Parents do not have to meet any special employment requirements. Although the largest number of parents of students are employed as teachers, 62 other businesses and professions are represented.

Of the total number of loans made this year, 92 were made to female students and 55 were to male students.

Loans were made to 74 students in Lancaster County, 56 in the Fort Mill area and 17 in the Chester area.

The Springs Close Foundation will loan up to $3,000 per year for undergraduate students and $4,000 per year for students attending medical or dental school.  The loans are interest-free and may be repaid over a period of four to seven years.

Applications will be available beginning today for spring semester students only.

Application forms and information booklets can be obtained from the offices of The Springs Close Foundation in Lancaster at the Springs House, 201 W. Gay St. (Lancaster County Council of the Arts, downstairs),  in Fort Mill at 951 Market St., Suite 205 (Exchange Building, second floor) and in Chester at 109 Gadsden St. (Chester County Chamber of Commerce building).
