Applications for Leroy Springs student loans are now available for students seeking assistance for college costs for the spring semester. The deadline for applications is Dec. 1.

The Springs Close Foundation Inc. has made 113 interest-free loans so far this year to college students in the Lancaster County, Chester and Fort Mill areas. Funds advanced will total $345,946 for an average of $3,061 per student. This includes loans made to students attending York Technical College, for an average of $1,500 per student.

The program was established in 1942 and, since then, 7,997 loans have been made for a total of $8,130,616. Loans are available to students who meet residential, academic and financial need requirements and attend a four-year, accredited, degree-granting college in South Carolina or York Technical College. Students in the program are enrolled at 24 colleges in the state this year. The University of South Carolina had 42 loan recipients, followed by Winthrop University and Clemson University with 13 each and The College of Charleston with eight.

Loans were made to 54 students in Lancaster County, 48 in Fort Mill and 11 in Chester.

The Springs Foundation will loan up to $3,000 per year for undergraduate students and $4,000 per year for students attending medical or dental school. The loans are interest-free and may be repaid over four to seven years. Parents do not have to meet any special requirements.

Gay St.; in Fort Mill at 1826 Second Baxter Crossing; and in Chester at 109 Gadsden St. They can also be picked up at the Leroy Springs & Co.
