Stellar seasons for USCL teams

-A A +A

The 2013 University of South Carolina Lancaster spring semester might be history, but a pair of  USCL spring sports teams are still going strong.
The Lancers’ golf team and baseball squad have extended their seasons into post-season play.
The 25-12 USCL golf team, under the leadership of coach Ricky Walters, is headed to the National Junior College national tournament after winning the Region X tournament with a sudden death win over Wake Tech at the Boscobel Golf Course in Pendleton last month.
The region title and a fifth-place finish in the district earned the Lancers their second trip to the national championship tournament in Lubbock, Texas.
A year ago, the Lancers earned a trip to the national tournament in Newton, Kansas.
Two Lancers golfers, Chandler McDonald and Austin Terry, earned all-region honors.
The USCL golf team had produced quite a tradition.
The team’s 2013 national bid is the Lancers fourth trip to a national tournament.
USCL competed in two nationals as a Division III school in its first two years as a NJCAA member.
The USCL baseball team, led by coach Steve Williams, produced quite a run in the recent region tournament to reap a bid to the NJCAA Eastern District tournament.
USCL opened the Region X tournament in Burlington, N.C., with a 6-5 extra-inning loss to Region X regular-season tournament champion Spartanburg Methodist College.
On the brink of elimination, the Lancers reeled off four straight do-or-die wins to earn a rematch with SMC.
The Pioneers downed the Lancers 8-4 to earn one bid to the district tournament, but the Lancers also received a coveted berth since Region X is sending two teams to the district tournament this season.
“Our backs were really up against the wall, but we came back fighting and I’m really proud of this team and the character they showed,” Williams said. “It says a great deal about a team being on the brink of elimination and charging back to play for the region title and a bid to the district tournament.”
The 21-28 Lancers earned their share of honors along with the district berth.
USCL catcher Byron Haag was named to the all-region first team, while Brantley Rumford and Randy Luckett were selected to the second team.
Luckett, an outfielder, was also chosen to the all-defensive team.
We laud the Lancers’ teams for their exciting runs to extend their seasons and wish them the best in hopes of making some more USCL sports history.
