The South Mustangs scored a touchdown in each half on the way to a 16-0 win over Lancaster middle school rival A.R. Rucker Middle School on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.

The Mustangs broke on top early in the second period following a Jeremy Tolliver fumble recovery to set up Tolliver’s seven-yard scoring run early in the second period. SMS’s Darius Robinson scored on the two-point play for an 8-0 lead.

Later in the half Rucker’s C’darious Catoe recovered a muffed punt at the South 28, but South held to take an 8-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Tolliver dashed 57 yards and Robinson added the conversion for a 16-0 Mustangs’ lead.

Davionne Eddie had an interception for the Mustangs.

SMS coach Jerry Wright said the defense was the difference.

“This was a good team win,” Wright said. “We had a strong defensive game. We knew it would be a hard-fought game and Tolliver came up big for us.”

Rucker coach Brett Blackmon said the Rams played hard.

“We’re young and inexperienced and we’re working hard to get better,” he said.
