Soccer coach teaches true sportsmanship

Over the past few years, I believe that the Lancaster Recreation Department would agree with me in saying that soccer has become one of the fastest growing sports in this area. With this growth have come many exciting opportunities for the youth of this area. My daughter, who has played soccer for the last five years, has had the unique fortune to be a part of one such experience.

This year Lancaster organized a Futbol club to promote youth soccer at a higher level. My 11-year-old has been fortunate enough to be a member of this club in its opening season.

The U12 team has been led by Lara Johnson, head coach of the Lancaster varsity girl’s soccer team. She has willingly given of her time at this volunteer position to promote soccer, a sport that she has spent her entire life committed to.

Let me share with you what she has done for the club and these girls. Lara has taken a group of girls that has not played together and woven them into a team. She has instilled in them the love of the game of soccer, the friendship that teammates have toward each other and taught them true sportsmanship. These girls have grown not only in their skill level, but in maturity that has been mirrored through her special leadership. They have witnessed dedication that wasn’t spoken but exemplified through the countless hours that she has dedicated to the growth and maturity of the girls individually and as a team. She has taught them respect and the skills that make a team a real team. They have learned valuable lessons for life that go beyond the soccer field on character and equality regardless of skill level.

I would like to extend my gratitude as a parent to Lara and would like the community to know what a treasure we have in her.
