Smokies slated to open 2012 season on June 4

The Ballantyne Smokies, with a new name and new diamond home, are ready to play ball this summer.

The Smokies, the former Carolina Sox, are members of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.

The Smokies, who played as the Carolina Stingers out of Fort Mill last season, include two college players from the nearby University of South Carolina Lancaster baseball program.

The Smokies have played under several names over the past few seasons, including the Rock Hill Sox and Carolina Thunder.
