Shutout win helps Lancers dodge sweep

The USCL Lancers dodged a diamond sweep from Louisburg College on Sunday afternoon.

The second-ranked Hurricanes, 36-4, won the first three-games of the four-game Region X series, but the Lancers avoided the sweep with a 3-0 win over Louisburg on Sunday afternoon.

Kyle Downs evened his record at 1-1, blanking the Hurricanes on a two-hitter. He struck out two and walked two.

The No. 19 Lancers struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Casey Cooper and Byron Haag each had RBI-hits to give USCL the runs it needed.

Kyle Towles rapped a double and scored a run. Julian Steen had a hit, scored a run and had a stolen base.

Stuart Pound had a RBI-hit and a stolen base.

The win pushed the Lancers’ mark to 28-9, 10-6 in Region play.

Lancaster opened the Sunday twin bill, dropping a 17-3 loss to the Hurricanes.

Louisburg led 6-2 after six innings, and used an 11-run seventh inning to take control of the game.

Tyler Rodgers, the former Andrew Jackson High School baseball star, belted a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Lancers’ final run in the opener.

Brantley Rumford and Kyle Towles each had a hit and drove in a run. Jared Huffman, Blake Outlaw, Dolan Crolley and Jordan Williams each had a hit for the Lancers.

Casey Cooper, 3-1, took the loss with six innings of work.

Louisburg opened the series with a sweep Saturday, winning 7-4 and 7-3.

The Hurricanes opened with a 7-4 win as Stuart Pound, 4-2, took the loss in five innings of work. He allowed five runs, four earned runs, 10 hits and two walks. He fanned four.

Ben Keane hurled two innings, yielding two runs, two hits and a walk. He gave up an earned run and had a strikeout.

Casey Cooper led the USCL offense with a solo home run and a double.

Brantley Rumford added two hits.

Randy Luckett had a hit and drove in a run. Stuart Pound and Jared Huffman each had a hit. Kyle Towles tallied a run.

In the Saturday nightcap, the Lancers dropped a 7-3 loss.

Andrew Ansley, 2-1, took the loss in 4.2 innings of  work. He allowed two runs, four hits and a walk. Ansley whiffed two.

Logan Segee hurled a third of an inning, yielding two runs, two hits and two earned runs. John McClure worked an inning and gave up three runs, three hits and fanned two.

Brian Hill pitched an inning and allowed a hit and fanned two.

Jared Huffman and Brantley Rumford each had two hits. Jacob Murphy belted a two-run homer.

Julian Steen supplied a hit and drove in a run. Stuart Pound, Casey Cooper and Byron Haag each had a hit.

 The Lancers are in action Friday and Saturday when they travel to Florence-Darlington Tech for a four-game series with the Stingers. Play opens each day at 1 p.m.
