Kershaw man dies from injuries in Pleasant Hill/St. Paul streets incident

By Chris Sardelli

A Kershaw man died late Monday night, Jan. 28, after he was shot in a Lancaster neighborhood on Saturday, in what police are calling the first murder of 2013.

Kevisis Anthony, 32, died from his injuries Monday at Carolinas Medical Center – Main in Charlotte, said Lancaster Police Capt. Scott Grant early Tuesday.

“This has turned into a murder investigation,” Grant said.

“We are developing a suspect in the case and we have an intense investigation.”

Police officers responded at about 9:41 p.m. Saturday to the area of St. Paul and Pleasant Hill streets in Lancaster about a report of shots fired, according to a Lancaster Police Department press release.

The officers found nothing in that area, but later learned that a gunshot victim had arrived at the Springs Memorial Hospital emergency room.

Police responded to the hospital and found Anthony, as well as a woman who drove him to the emergency room. Officers noted in the original police incident report that the victim had been shot in the head.

After an investigation, police learned the shooting happened in the 700 block of St. Paul Street. Several police investigators and members of the S.C. Law Enforcement Division responded to the scene, the report said.

Anthony was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon and died several hours later, Grant said.

The investigation is ongoing, though Grant could not provide further details about the shooting or discuss a possible motive for the shooting.

“At this time I’m reluctant to release anything else about the case as we look for suspects,” he said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the police department at (803) 283-1173 or the department’s anonymous tip line at (803) 289-6040.

Separate case

Police were called to the same area about a man with a gun in an unrelated case exactly one month prior to the shooting.

In that case, a 41-year-old man reported Dec. 26 that another man had pointed a revolver at his face near the intersection of Pleasant Hill and St. Paul streets, according to a separate police department incident report.

The victim in that case said the suspect cocked the revolver, though the victim was able to get away and call 911. It is unknown if any arrests have been made in that case.
