I’ve been looking at the web pages of two candidates for governor, Rep.Nikki Haley of Lexington (R) and Sen. Vincent Sheheen of Camden (D), trying to determine who would make the best governor. I found that both candidates list endorsements.
Haley is supported by Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Jenny Sanford, a host of Republican lawmakers and a group of TEA parties. She is endorsed by several newspapers, including the Edgefield Daily News, the Seneca Daily Journal and the Post & Courier.
Sheheen supporters include 43 current mayors from towns across South Carolina, the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, the S.C. Hospital Association and most of the major newspapers including The State, Rock Hill Herald, Greenville News and Spartanburg Journal.
To me, Sheheen’s most impressive endorsement is from the S.C. Education Association which includes the teachers. Since I have four grandsons in South Carolina public schools, I am very interested in schools. It scares me when I read that so many teachers are being fired and class sizes are getting larger and larger. Did you know that many times when a teacher is sick, instead of having a substitute, the students are distributed to other classrooms? What teacher can teach under those conditions?
Haley says she will continue Gov. Mark Sanford’s policies. Does that mean that she will try to close the University of South Carolina at Lancaster just like Sanford did?
I have decided to vote for Vincent Sheheen. I think he will do the best job for our schools and for our children’s educations.
