Rucker sweeps South to cap unbeaten seasons

Each Rucker team won in impressive fashion on the way to completing perfect 12-0 marks for the 2012-13 basketball season.

The Rucker Lady Rams, who have gone unbeaten twice in the last three seasons, rolled to a 48-17 win over the South girls.

Rucker zipped out to a 19-4 first-period lead and cruised to the 31-point victory over the Lady Mustangs.

Zaria Woods, who led the Lady Rams with 16, hit nine in the opening period to spark the  Rucker girls.

“This was a great experience and these girls played well all season,” Rucker coach Ben Hingle said. “They improved with every game.”

Rucker led 31-12 at the break and held a 44-14 edge with a quarter to go.

Woods, who hit 14 first half points, had plenty of help. Brisha Sanders scored 13 and Keiana Howze had seven. Tomeshiana Jackson netted five. Zy McIlwain had four. Asia McCrory netted two and Jonita Jones added one.

South was led by Ty Thompson who hit six and Summer Clinton netted five.

Gracie Revels, Arimoni Reid and Baylee Evans added two points each.

The Rucker boys completed the hoops sweep with a 51-26 win over the Mustangs.

The Rams, 12-0, took a 10-4 lead after one period and then took control with a 13-2 run in the second quarter to forge a 23-6 halftime lead.

The Rams held a 38-14 spread after three periods and cruised to the 25-point win.

“We have played as a team all season,” Rucker coach Lamont Elder said. “We worked well and had great team chemistry to go along with a balanced attack.

“I am proud of our hard work,” Elder said.

Jiquarius Stevenson led Rucker with 11, including two treys. C’Darius Catoe hit 10 and Nehemiah McGriff scored eight. Cordarius Tinsley tallied six as did Desmond Ricks. Demajae Ingram and Markeithon Blair had three each. Kendrick Shropshire and Desmond Stowers scored two each.

 Z’Kevious McKinney hit eight for South. Tytikeyo Scott scored six and Jalen Canty had five. C.J. Brown hit four. Gabriel Stewart had two and J’Quan Stover had one.
