Indian Land’s boys, 1-1, pulled out a last-second win to earn a split with visiting Cuthbertson of Union County, N.C., on Thursday, Dec. 5 in the Warriors’ gym.

Indian Land sophomore guard Darnell Rogers hit a pair of clutch free throws with five seconds to play to lift IL to a 67-65 win over the Cavaliers.

Rogers, a key returnee for the Warriors, led the winners with 34 points, none bigger than his final pair.

“Darnell is a veteran player and he came through with the game on the line,” IL coach Nate Smith said. “Coming off a home loss with York, this was a good win for us to get back on track. I hope we can build on this with a tough road stretch ahead for us.”

Indian Land broke from a 13-all tie in the first period to take a 34-27 lead at the half.

The Warriors held a 47-42 lead after three period before earning the two-point win.

“I thought we played better in the fourth quarter and executed well,” Smith said. “We did a better job of boxing out and were able to control the boards.”

Derries Hampton joined Rogers in double figures with 14. Mark Morton scored six and Brandon Barnes hit five. Mike Webb had four points.

Brandon Sellers and Quantra Taylor each netted two points.

Tyrek Dawson and Anthony Pandoli each scored 19 to pace the Cavs.

“I think we will be OK because we played all of our scrimmages on the road this season and I feel we will be ready to play away from home,” Smith said. “Those will be good tests for our team.”

The Lady Warriors saw their record dip to 1-1 with a 55-38 loss to the Lady Cavs.

Cuthbertson forged a 29-10 lead at the half and stayed in control for the 17-point win.
