Orientation, overview set for Thursday

By The Staff

Upper Palmetto Chapter American Red Cross

The American Red Cross needs people in our community to volunteer and is offering a volunteer orientation class from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, in Lancaster.

A new volunteer orientation and disaster services overview class will be held at the Lancaster Red Cross Office, 111 Covenant Street.

Because of trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, the Red Cross has helped more than 4,500 people and 1,500 families affected by disasters in this region of South Carolina in 2013.

On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours each day. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters spanning 35 counties of South Carolina.

To register for the class, visit www.redcross.org/volunteer or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.

About the Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood as well as teaching lifesaving skills.

The agency also provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.

The Red Cross is a charitable organization –  not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and public generosity to perform its mission.
