The A.R. Rucker Rams capped the middle school basketball season charging to a sweep of the rival South Middle Mustangs on Wednesday in the Lancaster High School gym.

The Lady Rams completed an unbeaten season – 13-0 – with a 53-11 win in the girls game.

The Rams, who fell to South 35-33 in December, completed the hardwood broom job with a 38-29 win over the Mustangs.

The Rucker boys, who finished 9-4, used a fast finish to post the nine-point win.

“I was pleased with our performance,” Rucker coach Lamont Elder said. “We played better in the second half of the season and tonight reflected that.

“We also had tremendous fan support which always makes a difference,” Elder said.

Rucker, up 25-23 with a period to play, used a 13-6 finish to notch the victory.

Tarone Heath and Zae Tinsley each hit four points in the pivotal final period to spark the Rams.

Rucker led 10-8 after one period and owned a 19-14 lead at the break. South closed the gap to two, 25-23, with a period to play, but the Rams answered for the win.

In the girls game, Rucker rolled to the 42-point win. The Lady Rams cruised to a 16-2 lead after one quarter and held a 28-5 halftime edge.

The third period sealed the issue, with Rucker using a 12-0 run to build a 40-5 spread.

“We played well as a team, with all contributing,” Rucker coach Ashley Price said. “We executed well and that was the key for us.”
