Progress continues on Veterans Monument

-A A +A

We continue to see a steady progress on the Veterans Monument since our last report May 29.
Installation of underground utilities is complete. The three sections of curved wall that will hold panels of inlaid granite with veterans’ names has been built, but is not complete.
Brick pavers purchased by sponsors and supporters have been laid. Cutting of the stone for the base and cap are complete. Cutting of the stone for the 10-foot mid-section is scheduled for the last week of July and the first week of August.
Committee members will travel to Elberton, Ga., on Aug. 5 to inspect cut granite and obtain a schedule of shipment.
Nov. 12 is the date set for the dedication of the Veterans Monument. Additional information will be provided concerning the dedication as plans fall into place.
Names of veterans can still be added to the wall for $250 each and we encourage supporters to continue to purchase brick pavers for $100 each. Pavers can be added at any time with names of supporters.
We have received more than 400 veteran names and the committee has completed verification on 176 names. Process of verification includes correct spelling of names, correct branch of service and verification that the person listed was, or is, a veteran. Once all names are verified a complete list will be provided for publication.
Mayor Ann Taylor and the Heath Springs Town Council are to be commended for all of their efforts in assisting the Veterans Monument Committee. All of you continue to be a positive influence on our efforts to bring this project to completion.
Call me if I can be of assistance in any way; Charles M. Ussery, vice president of Heath Springs Area Monument Committee, (803) 273-5146.
