Man tosses package over KCI fence

By Chris Sardelli

The search for a man seen throwing a package over a prison fence ended with the early morning arrest of a man wanted in Swansea on July 12.

Shawn Lee Wyatt, 29, of Columbia, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for drug paraphernalia from Swansea authorities, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

He was later charged with furnishing or attempting to furnish a prisoner with contraband, per the S.C. Judicial Department online case database.

Deputies responded to the area around Kershaw Correctional Institute, 4800 Gold Mine Highway, on July 12 at 6:16 a.m. about a man throwing contraband over the prison fence.

A prison worker told deputies that an officer assigned to the prison tower noticed a black man come out of the woods, hurl a package over the prison fence and then run back into the woods. The man was described as wearing a black shirt and jean shorts, the report said.

As deputies patrolled the area, they found a man nearby who matched the description, later identified as Wyatt.

Deputies spoke with Wyatt and checked his name in the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) database, which showed he was wanted by the Swansea Police Department in Lexington County on the drug charge. He was then arrested by the deputies.

The deputies told Wyatt he matched the description of a man seen throwing a package over the prison fence, though Wyatt said it wasn’t him.

“(He said) that he was coming from Lancaster and pointed towards the Flat Creek area and further stated that he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument and he left walking,” a deputy wrote in the report.

When asked for his girlfriend’s name, Wyatt told deputies he only knew her as “Honey,” the report said.

Prison officers later identified Wyatt as the man seen throwing the package, the report said.

He was then jailed at the Lancaster County Detention Center.

One of the prison workers confirmed that KCI would seek charges against Wyatt.

Wyatt was formally charged with furnishing contraband during a circuit court bond hearing the day of his arrest, per judicial records.

A $125,000 surety bond was set for Wyatt. His first court appearance for charges in the Sixth Judicial Circuit, which covers Lancaster County, is scheduled for Sept. 6, according to the judicial site.

It was unknown Friday, July 19, what items were thrown over the prison fence or if Wyatt would be transferred to Swansea authorities.
