The Lancaster City Council seat vacated by Preston Blackmon's death will be available for filing later this month.

Blackmon, who died Saturday at age 82, served as the District 1 councilman for 31 years. Part of the last two years, he was absent from most meetings while battling illness.

Filing for that seat will open at noon Aug. 22 and will close at noon Sept. 4, said Lancaster County election official Cassie Stump.

About two years remain in Blackmon's term.

"We will have that election (District 1 seat) the same day as the others in November," said Stump, referring to Nov. 4.

Seats for City Council Districts 3, 4 and 6 are also up for election this year, as are Lancaster County school board Districts 2, 4 and 6.

Here's who has filed for City Council:

– District 3 – incumbent Audrey Curry and former City Councilwoman Linda Blackmon-Brace

– District 4 – incumbent Bill Sumner and political newcomer Tamara Green

– District 6 – John Griffin

Here's who has filed for school board:

– District 2 – incumbent board chairwoman Charlene McGriff

– District 4 – incumbent Peter Barry and AnThony Pelham

– District 6 – incumbent Margaret Gamble

Candidates may file for the non-partisan offices at the Voter Registration office at the County Administration Building, 101 N. Main St.

Filing for those seats began Aug. 1 and closes at noon. Aug. 15. Cost for filing for City Council is $35. There is no filing fee for school board.

Stump said the filing has followed its typical pattern so far.

"Usually it's the first day and the last day," Stump said. "The time in between – not a lot."
