The Lancaster American Legion junior team rebounded to keep alive its state tournament hopes Wednesday night.
The P-31 juniors, after dropping a 4-2 home loss to Gaffney Post 109 on Tuesday night, ventured to Gaffney on Wednesday and rallied for an 8-7 win to force a decisive third game Thursday night in Lancaster.
The game Thursday was completed after The News’ deadline for the Friday paper. See the Sunday paper for a complete wrap-up.
In the P-31 win on Wednesday, 14-3 Lancaster, down 5-1, used a seven-run fourth inning rally to take the lead and held on for the victory.
Kendall Knight opened the rally with a solo home run and Wyatt Duncan, who had three hits, smashed a two-run double to key the Lancaster rally. Duncan also tallied a run.
“Kendall’s homer got us going and we picked up our bats from that point,” Lancaster juniors coach Brant Barnes said.
The seven-run rally gave Lancaster an 8-5 edge. Gaffney came back with a single run in the fourth and a run in the seventh, but P-31 held on for the win.
Doopy Cloud, 3-0, worked 6.1 innings for the win. Cloud struck out five and allowed two walks, six hits and hit a batter. Jordan Brock, who took the loss in the opener, notched the save in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Cloud aided his mound effort with a two-run single and scored a run.
Chandler Gardner had a hit and a double, drove in a run and scored a run to boost the Lancaster attack.
Chandler Neal had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run. Sid Watson rapped a RBI-hit and tallied a run.
Gabe Glover generated a hit and scored a run. Trey Payne also scored a run.
In the opener on Tuesday at Lancaster, Brock, in five innings of work, took the loss in the two-run defeat.
Duncan led the offense with a hit and drove in two runs. Payne, Neal, Watson, Brock and Knight each had a hit.
The winner of the Lancaster-Gaffney series earns a bid to the American Legion junior state tournament in Florence July 16-20.
The winner will play in another best-of-three series next week to determine the state tournament seeding.
