It seems every day, the governor, a lawmaker or a bureaucrat is touting another “economic development” project that’s slated to create some improbable number of jobs (usually a suspiciously round number – 2,500 or 5,000).
We hear the exclamations: “We’re creating more jobs!”
Don’t get me wrong, jobs are great, but what exactly gives you, a state government, the idea that it’s your function to create jobs, or to “develop” the private-sector economy?
