The Lancaster Bruins opened the 2009 portion of their high school wrestling schedule on Wednesday night, posting a 42-36 win over the Spring Valley Vikings.

“I was real proud of our guys,” said Lancaster High wrestling coach Terry Marshall, who saw his team improve to 2-5 on the season. “I thought we had good effort throughout our lineup.”

LHS pin winners included Gabe Campo (112), Cody Pate (119), Joe Craig (152), Dawan Thompson (189) and Clay Rollings (215). Marquise Perry and Donald Heath each had a decision and Justin Harper won by forfeit.

The match was tied at 30-all, but Thompson and Rollings delivered late pins to propel the Bruins to the league victory.

“Clay and Dawan are veterans and gave us some crucial pins in the clutch,” Marshall said. “Those seasoned wrestlers have to step up for you and they did. Mat experience makes a difference and they responded with pins.”

Marshall also noted Pate’s pin.

“That was Cody’s first pin and it came at a good time,” Marshall said. “Cody is like a lot of our younger wrestlers. They have worked and improved a great deal over the holiday break.

“That made a difference for us. I felt we were ready for this match. This is a good way to start off the 2009 part of our schedule.

“We have a good group of wrestlers and these kids are going to learn and keep improving this season,” Marshall said. “I’m positive about our wrestling future with the program.”

Lancaster, 1-1 in Region IV-AAAA, will compete in the two-day Bearcat Invitational at Rock Hill High School where the tournament will be held today and Saturday.

“We will face some outstanding competition, some tough wrestling teams, but that’s really going to help us get better,” Marshall said. “Going against these teams can only help us improve as a team.”

Following the Bearcat tournament, Lancaster will face county rival Buford High School in a dual wrestling match on Thursday in the Jackets’ gym at 7 p.m.

LHS returns to region wrestling action Jan. 20 when the Bruins host Rock Hill High School at 7.
