Opening round pairings for the S.C. American Legion state tournament are set.
Lancaster Post 31 will open play Saturday with a 9 a.m. clash with Goose Creek at Dolny Stadium at Lander University.
The Lancaster vs. Goose Creek game is one of two games set for a 9 a.m. start Saturday.
West Columbia faces Greer at Greenwood Post 20’s John Nave Stadium at 9.
The second session of play begins at 7 p.m. Saturday when Greenwood Post 20 meets Sumter at Nave Stadium.
The 7 p.m. clash at Lander’s Dolny Stadium has Florence facing Union.
Second-round play begins Sunday at 9 a.m.
Lancaster earned its trip to the state tournament, defeating Greenwood Post 20 in the best-of-five second-round series, 3-2 Monday night in Greenwood.
Lancaster, 21-8, qualified for the American Legion Upper State playoffs, finishing as the League V runner-up to Rock Hill.
In the opening round series, Lancaster defeated Inman in the best of five series, 3-2.
Lancaster, in the second-round series with Greenwood, trailed 2-1 after three games, but posted back-to-back wins – 14-10 at home and 9-8 in Greenwood – to advance.
In the game five win at Greenwood, Lancaster was down 8-6 in the top of the ninth inning, but rallied with three runs.
Tripp Rollings, the winning pitcher, drilled a solo home run and Devin Rodgers singled home Tyler Rodgers and Trey Payne to give Lancaster the 9-8 win.
Rollings worked a scoreless ninth to cap the Lancaster victory.
“Winning at Greenwood in that final game gives us some momentum,” Lancaster coach Quinton Rodgers said. “We have a little boost as we head into the state tournament. We’re real excited about having a chance to play for the state tournament.”
