The Lancaster Post 31 seniors hit the early-season break with a nightcap win to highlight a doubleheader split with League V foe Clover Post 38 on Wednesday, May 29.

After falling to Clover 4-3 in extra innings in the opener, Lancaster rebounded to down P-38, 7-2.

Seniors’ southpaw C.D. Pelham, who worked six frames, teamed with right-hander Dustin Eddins to toss a no-hitter.

Pelham struck out 15 batters and allowed seven walks. He also picked off a baserunner. Eddins hurled an inning of scoreless relief to cap the Lancaster win.

First-year senior team catcher Evan “Buck Shot” Flynn, who caught 14.1 innings in two games, also picked off a runner in the game.

Drew Hopper, Sid Watson and Tripp Rollings triggered the Post 31 offense in the five-run victory.

Hopper rapped two hits, a single and a solo home run, while Watson supplied two hits, scored a run, walked and had a stolen base.

Rollings singled and belted a solo home run.

Pelham, in support of his mound cause, singled, drew two walks and tallied a run.

Jonah Crenshaw crashed a double, while Skylar King delivered a RBI-hit, walk and scored a run. Chandler Neal added a single in Lancaster’s 10-hit attack.

The nightcap win pushed the P-31 seniors’ record to 4-2 overall, 4-1 in league play. Lancaster also leads the season series with Clover, 2-1. P-31 belted Clover 22-2 on Friday, May 24 in the seniors’ 70th home opener.

“We’re in good position at this early part of the season,” Lancaster P-31 coach Marc Rape said. “We’re pleased, but not satisfied at this point. We still have some areas to work on and improve.”

In the opener, Clover edged Lancaster, 4-3 in nine innings. The twin bill was slated for two seven-inning games.

Clover scored a run in the ninth to take the win.

Drew Hopper, who worked 1.2 frames, took the loss, yielding a walk, and no hits. Kholby Pate, who hurled seven frames, gave up three hits and two walks. He fanned four. Evan Flynn also pitched in the ninth.

Hopper, in his mound stint, also threw out a runner at the plate where Flynn made the tag.

Hopper led the way with two hits – double and a single, walk and a stolen base. Pate posted a double, single, RBI and scored a run. Flynn drilled two hits.

Wyatt Duncan had a hit, scored a run and drove in a run.

Dustin Eddins belted a triple and scored a run. Brandon Cato and Chandler Neal each had a hit.

Tripp Rollings walked, stole a base and scored a run.

Lancaster, with the annual June week break for area high school graduations, is idle until Monday, June 10 when the seniors host Rock Hill Post 34.

Juniors top Post 34

The Lancaster Post 31 junior team opened League V play with a 6-0 win over Rock Hill Post 34 at Eggleton Field on Tuesday, May 28.

Eric Miles, with 6.1 frames, was the winner, posting four strikeouts in the shutout. He allowed two hits. Gage Hinson closed out the game with two whiffs.

Miles sparked the P-31 juniors’ offense with three hits and a RBI. Drew Rollings and Wesley Knight each had a hit. Austin Pate added a RBI.

Byron Hegler had a solid game at third base.

The juniors hosted Clover on Thursday. Lancaster visits Rock Hill Post 34 on Wednesday, June 5.
