Junior team making strides after slow start

By Robert Howey

The Lancaster American Legion Post 31 junior baseball team, after a slow start, is starting to come on.

The juniors, who started 0-3, are now 2-4 after winning two of three games this week in Legion baseball League V play.

Lancaster juniors’ pitcher Dalton Creighton, in his first start on the mound, turned in a stellar effort on Thursday night. Creighton, in a 7-2 win over York Post 66, went the distance in allowing two runs and three hits. He also struck out six P-66 batters.

“The big key is that Dalton didn’t allow a leadoff batter to get on base,” Lancaster coach Palmer Hudson said. “He did a good job of staying ahead in a quality pitching effort. He was in control.”

Hudson noted the Lancaster defense only had two errors.

“That was an area where we had some trouble early in the season, but we’re making strides,” he said. “We’ve worked on making plays and it has helped us in our fielding.”

Creighton had plenty of help on the offensive side.

Austin Pate had a three-run double for the juniors and D.J. Crawford drilled a triple and scored a run.

Troy Cunningham supplied two hits and scored a run.

Daniel Mackey reached base four times and scored three runs. Mackey, in his night at the plate, had a hit, walk and was hit by a pitch twice.

Trey Cunningham had a hit and tallied a run. Austin Robinson also scored a run for the juniors.

“I feel we’re starting to come together as a team,” Hudson said. “This is a team which didn’t have any Legion baseball experience coming back from last season, but we’re coming around at the midpoint of the season. Hopefully, we can build on this and have a strong finish.”

On Monday, Lancaster split a twin bill with Clover, posting its first win, a 6-3 victory over Post 38.

The Lancaster juniors will be at home Monday when the P-31 team faces Rock Hill Post 34 at Eggleton Field in a 7 p.m. start. The juniors host Clover on Wednesday.

The Lancaster Post 31 senior baseball team, 3-0 on the season, faces a key game Monday when it travels to Fort Mill Post 43 to face the 4-0 FM team.

The Lancaster seniors are coming off a 12-6 win over Clover on Tuesday night.

Chandler Gardner, 2-0, posted the win in 5.2 innings of work, which included 11 strikeouts. The right-hander allowed three runs, five hits and two walks.

Chandler Neal sparked the Lancaster offense with a pair of hits, including a solo home run. Tripp Rollings drilled two doubles and drove in a couple of runs.

Jonah Crenshaw supplied two hits, including a double and drove in two runs.

Devin Rodgers delivered two hits with a double.

After the trip to Fort Mill, the Lancaster senior team will host York Post 66 on Tuesday and Chester Post 27 on Thursday in a pair of 7 p.m. League V games.
