Tim Deaton caught this photograph of the blue moon from the front yard of his Kershaw home between 10:30 and 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. The term “blue moon” doesn’t refer to the color, but to the rarity of the occurrence. Blue moons are defined as the fourth full moon of the year or the second full moon of the month. The latter definition covers Friday’s event, since the first full moon of the month was Aug. 1. Blue moons happen every 2.7 years and the next one is set to occur July 31, 2015.
