The South Middle School Mustangs scored a touchdown in each half on the way to a 16-0 football win over previously unbeaten Buford on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.South improved to 5-1 with the win. Buford fell to 5-1.South’s Rashawn Cloud picked off a screen pass and raced 70 yards with 35 seconds left in the half to snap a scoreless tie. J.J. Massey scored on the first of his two-point conversions to make it 8-0 at the half.In the second half, a Marqui Stanback interception set up SMS’s second score, a 27-yard run by Mardarius Bailey. Massey added the two-point conversion.Michael Gainer also had an interception for South.South coach Jerry Wright saluted the play of Terrell White, who played well on both sides of the ball as well as the Stangs’ offensive line.BHS powder puffThe powder puff game between the Buford High seniors and juniors on Tuesday night came down to one play in double overtime when Lindsey Pressley scored a touchdown on a two-play drive to give the Class of 2009 the hard-fought win.The juniors squad, which made it to the shadow of the goal after a strong run by Jena Hallman as the clock ran down in the fourth quarter, scored on a three-play double overtime drive to fall short. The contest was part of BHS homecoming festivities and drew a crowd of more than 250 spectators.LHS tennis winsThe Lancaster High girls tennis team defeated Rock Hill 6-0 on Tuesday to improve to 11-2, 6-1.The top match was between LHS’s Lyndsey Hegler and RHHS’s Catherine White, two of the region’s top young players. Hegler was able to win a crucial deuce point during the middle of the second set to keep the score in her favor. Courtney Cauthen followed at 27:20. Ashley Null posted a 28:30 and Lena Pringle had a 30:20.The region meet is Thursday with the state Nov. 1.
