Dyllan Moss,16, used a 6:20 pace to post a 19:41 effort to win the third annual 5K Race for Literacy road race Saturday, May 6 on the course at the University of South Carolina Lancaster.
Moss, a Charlotte runner, topped a 157-runner field.
The 2011 race drew 137 runners.
This year, the race drew 201 registered runners and 157 finished the event.
“We were pleased with the event,” said Kathy Wilds, the Lancaster Area Literacy Cooperative Executive Director. “It’s nice to see the Lancaster community come out and embrace an event like this.
“We’re pleased with the sponsors and very grateful for their support of our race,” Wilds said. “If not for sponsors, we would not be able to have a successful event.”
She noted the event raised $7.400.
Wilds said event planners have begun working on the 2013 race.
“We took a survey of the runners and we have begun considering ideas for next year,” she said. “We had a good number of 40 and over runners and one thing we plan to do is have more age groups for the older runners. That feedback is valuable to future planning.
“We want to make this event better for every age group and ability,” Wilds said. “We’re pleased with where we are because the race keeps growing and one day we would like to have a race with 500 or more runners.”
Julie Webster, who placed 23rd overall in a time of 25:25, was the top female finisher with an 8:11 pace.
