A Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputy found the body of a missing Charlotte woman in a pond south of Indian Land late Wednesday morning, Oct. 30, after stopping to investigate a car parked beside Charlotte Highway.
Lancaster County Coroner Mike Morris identified the woman as Sharon D. Clifton, 61, reported missing by family members several days earlier.
Clifton, Morris said, died of self-inflicted wounds after parking her car at the nearby entrance to an overgrown, wooded lane off Charlotte Highway about two-tenths of a mile south of Charles Pettus Road.
She is believed to have died overnight Sunday, a timeframe confirmed by area residents, one of whom said he first noticed Clifton’s white Honda Civic on Monday morning.
Clifton is believed to have been familiar with roads in Indian Land due to her volunteer work rescuing stray dogs, Morris said.
The Lancaster News does not generally report suicides, but made an exception in Clifton’s case, due to the public nature of her death.
