A Kershaw man is behind bars in connection with the shooting of a man outside an apartment complex on Monday, July 28.

Willie Lee Knox, 57, 7996 Flat Rock Road, Kershaw, was charged Wednesday, July 30, and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Knox turned himself in to deputies after warrants were issued for his arrest.

Investigators had identified Knox as a suspect in the shooting of a 34-year-old Lugoff man in his ear at the Foxwood Apartment complex in the 600 block of Kershaw Country Club Road, the release said.

The victim was found by deputies at about 5:36 p.m. after he called 911 to say he’d been shot in the head, a sheriff’s office incident report said.

A group of about 10 bystanders pointed deputies toward the upstairs foyer of building 8, where they found the man walking around holding the side of his head, the report said.

“When he moved his hand, I observed blood in the area above his left ear,” a deputy wrote in the report.

The deputies noticed the victim had a gunshot wound in his ear and the man confirmed he had been shot by a unknown black man with grey in his hair and beard, the report said.

Deputies grabbed a first aid kit and began to wrap his head with a bandage. He was then taken by EMS to Springs Memorial Hospital emergency room.

A hospital spokeswoman said the victim was treated for a non-life threatening wound and released later that day.

No one at the scene could provide any information about the shooter, though deputies later spoke with a man at the nearby Kershaw Golf Course. The man said he was about to tee off when he heard three gunshots coming from the apartment complex, the report said.

The witness remembered hearing several vehicles and a scooter leave immediately after the shooting. He then saw a white SUV speed up Kershaw Country Club Road, followed a few minutes later by a Chevy Malibu headed in the same direction.

Knox’s bond on both charges was denied and he remained jailed at the Lancaster County Detention Center on Friday afternoon.

According to the S.C. Judicial Department online database, Knox also has a pending charge of receiving stolen goods, $2,000 or less.
