An Indian Land man found himself behind bars late last month after deputies arrested him for accidentally shooting his neighbor’s home with a rifle.
Adam Ross Bain, 28, 9859 Southwinds Drive, was arrested Aug. 27 on a charge of discharging a firearm into a dwelling, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
Deputies were called to a home in the 9000 block of Kohut Road in Indian Land at about 4 p.m. after a report of someone shooting into a home.
At the scene, the homeowner told deputies that a neighbor had been shooting in his backyard and a round came through the rear french door of her home, the report said.
“(The woman) said that her grandchildren had just finished eating at the table when they heard the gunshots,” Deputy Kerry Aldridge wrote in the report.
The family then heard the glass from the door shatter, the report said.
The woman’s husband told deputies he was walking into a bedroom when he heard something strike the wall next to him, looked down and saw a bullet on the kitchen floor.
The family then left the house and called 911.
A deputy examined the inside of the home and noticed a hole in the blinds on the french door in the kitchen. About eight feet away, the deputy also found a rifle projectile on the floor, which appeared to have been fired, the report said.
The deputy also noticed a mark on a wall near the bedroom that appeared to be in line with the hole in the door.
Estimated damage to the door, blinds and wall is $560, the report said.
The homeowner also mentioned she had called 911 after a previous incident and a deputy had spoken to the neighbor.
Several deputies then spoke with the neighbor, Bain, who said he had been target shooting in his backyard.
“He was shooting at a large tree in his backyard and he guessed one round missed the tree,” Aldridge wrote in the report.
Deputies later recovered his rifle, as well as 11 spent rifle shell casings on a pathway where he had been shooting, the report said. The rifle and shell casings were all collected as evidence.
The deputies then arrested Bain for discharging the rifle into an occupied home and he was later jailed at the Lancaster County Detention Center.
