A Lancaster man was arrested on a slew of drug charges following a late-night traffic stop last month.
Marcus Olander Thigpen, 35, 2680 Quiet Acres Road, was arrested Sept. 25 on charges of possession of marijuana, first offense, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession within intent to distribute crack cocaine within the proximity of a church, possession with intent to distribute cocaine within the proximity of a church, and littering, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office incident report.
While on patrol at 12:39 p.m. Sept. 25, a deputy noticed a motorist on Airport Road who was driving erratically.
The report said the driver ran off the shoulder of the road, then drove into the grass and swerved back onto the road several times, the report said.
The deputy caught up with the driver, later identified as Thigpen, along Grace Avenue and noticed the car swerve several times across the center line, the report said.
Flipping on his blue lights, the deputy tried to pull the car over, though Thigpen continued driving. The deputy then noticed someone throw a small plastic bag out of the car window, the report said.
Thigpen then stopped his car in the 500 block of Grace Avenue and the deputy called for backup.
A responding deputy found the small plastic bag in the northbound lane.
The bag was filled with seven separate bags filled with .5 grams of marijuana, 6.1 grams of cocaine and 2.5 grams of crack cocaine, the report said.
Deputies noted in the report that it appeared the bags were packaged for sale and not for personal use.
The deputies also noticed that Victory Baptist Church was only a half-mile from the scene, which resulted in several of his charges.
When Thingpen was searched, deputies also found $265 in one of his pockets, which was collected into evidence, the report said.
Thigpen is listed as a defendant in 20 cases, several of which are still pending, dating back to 1997 in the Sixth Judicial Circuit, which covers Lancaster County, according to the S.C. Judicial Department online case database.
In addition to the pending charges from the Sept. 25 arrest, Thigpen also has a pending charge of unlawful carrying of a pistol stemming from a March 25, 2012, arrest, per judicial records.
