A 29-year-old Lancaster man died early Saturday morning after a single-vehicle accident.

Jason Shawn Payne, of 681 Adams Lane, Lancaster, was driving a 1990 Chevrolet pickup south on S.C. 522 in the Buford community when he veered off the road about 2:40 a.m., said S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Neal Bradley.

"He ran off the right side of the road, overturned and was ejected from the vehicle," Bradley said.

Payne was going between 70 and 75 mph in a 55-mph speed zone, Bradley said.

Alcohol was a factor in the accident and Payne was not wearing a seat belt, Bradley said.

Payne was taken to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, where he was pronounced dead.

Lancaster County is having a worse year in terms of traffic fatalities when compared to last year. At this point last year, the county had 10 to report, Bradley said.

There have been 15 traffic fatalities in Lancaster County this year.

South Carolina ranks among the highest in the country in terms of number of traffic deaths and serious accidents per number of vehicles on roadways.
