Local events to celebrate life and dream of MLK

A number of events are scheduled to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Lancaster County.

Most will be held Monday, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Schools and local, state and government offices will be closed to commemorate the life of the civil rights leader. The Lancaster News office on North White Street is also closed for the holiday.

Events kick off when the Lancaster Branch of the NAACP holds its annual celebration at 4 p.m. Sunday at Living Word Church of Lancaster, 115 Market St.

Events scheduled for Monday include:

- The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast at 7 a.m. at the University of South Carolina at Lancaster's Bradley Arts and Sciences Building. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for children 5 and over and $250 for a VIP table that seats eight. The speaker will be Vincent Williams, author of "How Do I Reach My True Destiny?" Proceeds go to the Rosetta Seegars, Henry Pelham Sr. and Hester Wade memorial scholarship fund. For details, call 288-8144 or 804-9090.

- The Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration at 8 a.m. at the United Citizens Community Center on Hart Street in Heath Springs. The cost is $5 for adults and $4 for children and children under 3 eat free. The speaker will be the Rev. William Coleman, pastor of Bright Light Missionary Baptist Church.

- Mount Carmel AME Zion Church will hold its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at noon at the church, 4336 Mount Carmel Road, Heath Springs. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Robert E. Christian Jr. For details, call 285-6064.

- King's life will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Spirit Road. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Wright, pastor of Pleasant Plain Missionary Baptist Church. The Ministerial Alliance of Lancaster will sponsor the event. For details, call 285-0062.
