The Lancaster High School baseball team kept its Class AAAA Upstate playoff hopes alive with a 10-6 win over host Nation Ford on Friday night in the LHS regular-season finale.Senior hurler Evan Byrd, in 4.2 innings of work, notched the win. He allowed no runs, two hits and a walk. Byrd struck out two.Michael Catoe went 2.1 innings and yielded six runs, six hits and a walk.The Bruins, 10-11-1, 8-6 in region play, responded at the plate as Byrd had two hits and drove in a run. Catoe had a pair of hits and drove in two runs. Ross Maiden notched two hits, including a solo home run, to go with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Brion Strothers had two hits and scored a run.Josh Warfield also had a couple of hits, including a triple, and drove in a run.Jimmie Jordan chipped in a single and scored twice, while Nick Ferguson had a hit and tallied a run. Trevor Hammond and Will Gaston each generated a hit and Andrew Smyre tallied twice.“We’ve done our part,” LHS coach Steve Williams said. “We wait now and see how it falls.”If LHS earns a bid, the Bruins open postseason play Thursday.Lady Bruins fallNation Ford foiled LHS softball Senior Day with a 9-4 win over the Lady Bruins on Friday.Lancaster, 11-4, 11-3, trailed 4-2 in the sixth, but junior pitcher Courtney Cauthen drilled a two-run single to tie the game.The game stayed tied until the eighth when Nation Ford ignited for five runs to take control.Cauthen took the loss, allowing seven hits and four walks. She struck out eight.Cauthen had two hits, including a double. Candice Benson also had two hits. Cherrell Cousar banged a double. Crystal Cauthen, Anna Howey, McKenzie Humphries, Angela Faile and Almeshea Catoe each had a hit.The game marked the final home game for LHS seniors McKenzie Humphries and Elizabeth Jeffers.The Lady Bruins visited county rival AJ for a 3 p.m. clash Saturday, but the game was completed after The News’ deadline for Sunday’s paper. See Wednesday’s paper for a report and playoff update.Jackets win easyBuford wrapped up the Conference VIII-AA runner-up spot in baseball with a pair of easy wins Friday.BHS was slated to host Lee Central of Bishopville for a league twin bill, but the Stallions didn’t make the trip from Bishopville to Buford Park and the Jackets took two forfeits.Buford hosts North Central for Jackets’ Senior Day on Monday at 6:30 p.m.BHS opens the playoffs at home Thursday when the Jackets face Marion at 6:30 p.m.BHS golfers thirdThe Buford High golf team shot a 177 to place third in a four-way match on Thursday at the Lancaster Golf Club. Trevor Banks led BHS with a 40 and Jalen Terry followed with a 44. Taylor Banks shot a 46 and Taylor Threatt had a 47. Central, which won with a 152, was led by medalist Mike Burch’s 35. Cheraw followed at 171, with BHS at 177 and Great Falls at 195.Buford topped Great Falls, shooting a 170 to the Devils’ 181 on Wednesday.Trevor Banks paced the Jackets with a 37 and Taylor Banks had a 41. Jalen Terry carded a 44 and Brandon Watts had a 51. Jordan Hinson led GFHS with a 42.
