Lancaster High School capped its 2007-08 sports year, saluting spring sports stars Tuesday night in the LHS auditorium.
Award recipients, letter winners and participation awards were presented in eight sports.
Several sports had dual winners, including baseball where senior outfielder-pitcher Nick Ferguson was named MVP and earned all-region honors.
Ferguson, headed to Spartanburg Methodist College to play baseball, was also presented the Friends of Lancaster Baseball Academic Award.
Softball standouts Cherrell Cousar and Courtney Cauthen each received a pair of awards. Cousar, the LHS third baseman, earned the Offensive Award and reaped all-region laurels.
Cauthen, the LHS ace hurler, was presented the Defensive MVP and an all-region award.
Region III-AAAA shot put champions Shaun Boling and Sha’Quandra Waters were busy during the track awards.
Boling, unbeaten in the shot during the regular-season and region meet, reaped the boys track Coaches Award, while Waters was tabbed as the Lady Bruins track Most Improved performer.
LHS ace keeper O’Neal Simpson led the boys’ soccer awards with the Bruins booters’ MVP and an all-region plaque.
In addition, retiring LHS baseball coach Steve Williams was honored for 26 years of work with the Bruins’ program. LHS principal Dr. Joe Keenan announced an education scholarship, which is to be awarded annually, will be established in Williams’ honor.
Guest speaker Dr. Ellen Rucker Carter, a former Bruins’ athlete as a cheerleader and track team member, offered key words of advice.
“Stay on task, stay focused and stay around positive people,” Rucker said. “Life is a balancing act, so learn to be consistent and persevere. If you make good choices and work hard, you will achieve your goals.”
