Lancaster had a tough night on the high school hardwood, dropping a pair of home games to Class AAAA foe York on Thursday night.

The Lady Cougars clawed the Lady Bruins 63-37 in the opener and the York boys capped the sweep with an 85-79 win in the nightcap.

Lancaster, 4-5, held a 35-33 lead at the half, but York rallied to gain a 54-51 edge with a period to play. The game was tight to the wire, but the Cougars prevailed for an 85-79 win.

Jerry Holmes hit 33 points to pace the Cougars and Zack Sharpe supplied 14.

LHS senior guard Shurdell Wright led the Bruins with 29, including three treys. He scored 14 in the final period as the Bruins tried to rally for their third straight win.

Senior guard Mike Catoe tallied 17. Avery Harris hit nine and Gerard Brace finished with eight. Ron Trapps and Tracy Ingram added five points apiece.

Xavier Holloway had three points. Nehemiah Stewart scored two and Jonathan McGriff added one point for the Bruins.

In the opener, York held a 25-18 lead at the break and then used an 18-5 third-quarter run to take control of the game with a 43-23 edge.

“We didn’t execute,” LHS coach Ronnie Robinson said. “Defensively, I thought we played well, but we couldn’t handle their pressure.

“We had way too many turnovers,” he said. “York deserves credit. We kept a hand in their face, but they hit some tough shots.”

Almesha Catoe and Tamesha Fletcher led the LHS girls with nine points each. Catoe scored all of her points in the final quarter.

Quana Jones and Shannon Truesdale each scored four points. Eldrina McIlwain, Tara Tipton and Laquisha Stewart supplied three points each.

Shaniqua Waters finished with two points.

York was paced by Ashanti Wilson’s 14 points. Erika Shannon followed with 12 points.

The LHS girls faced Boiling Springs in the Rock Hill Christmas tournament on Saturday. The tourney continues play into next week. See Wednesday’s edition for a full report on the game.
