ROCK HILL – The Lancaster Bruins' Region III-AAAA opener was a downer.The Bruins, on a league road trip to Northwestern of Rock Hill, had a rocky night on the hardwood, dropping both ends of the twin bill.The Lady Bruins opened play, falling 51-44. Northwestern, 1-0, 1-4, completed the sweep with a 74-37 win in the nightcap.The girls' game was closer, but the Lady Trojans took the win.The NWHS girls, 2-5, 1-0, broke from an 8-all tie after one period to take a 24-13 lead at the break.The Lady Trojans used a 14-5 surge in the second period to take a lead it never yielded.“Our level of intensity wasn't the same throughout the game and it came back to haunt us,” Lancaster coach Ronnie Robinson said. “We missed too many high percentage shots.”Lancaster, 3-2, 0-1, battled to the wire and closed the gap to 46-42 with 1:13 to play on Quana Jones' bucket, but NWHS finished with a 5-2 spree to secure the win.“I thought we made a great effort to put ourselves in position to win, but Northwestern made some key free throws to seal the win,” Robinson said.NWHS made 7 of 10 free throws in the final period.Tamesha Fletcher, Dimaya Jones and Tenisha Howze each hit 10 points to pace the LHS girls. Quana Jones finished with eight points and Miteka Trueheart added six points. Howze also grabbed 10 rebounds.Kelia Shelton led the Lady Trojans with 24 points, 12 in each half. Shelton hit 14 points at the foul line.In the boys' game, Northwestern bolted to a 26-2 lead after one period to cruise to the 37-point win.Northwestern led 37-12 at the break and was in control all the way.“Northwestern is one of the top teams in the state and you can't start off in a hole the way we did,” LHS coach Ricardo Priester said. “We had way too many turnovers and loose balls.“We also had the shots, but they didn't fall,” he said.Patrick Cunningham led NWHS with 16 points. Will King had 13 points and Taylor Shuggart scored 12. The Trojans were rated 10th in the Class AAAA boys preseason poll, but lost four straight before ending the skid against the Bruins, 4-1, 0-1.Xavier Holloway led Lancaster with seven points. Mitchell Belk and Terron Truesdale hit six points each. Michael Catoe chipped in five points. Casey Catoe netted four points.Shurdell Wright and Ron Trapps hit three points each. Avery Harris had two points and Robert Fletcher added one point.Lancaster is back home Tuesday for its final game prior to the Christmas break, meeting York in region play. LHS returns to play Dec. 27 when it faces Great Falls in the opening round of the Comporium Christmas Classic at Andrew Jackson High School.The LHS girls face Great Falls at 4 p.m., with the boys' game at 5:30.
